It speaks volumes for the enthusiasm for Australian football that 6000 spectators should have watched a game under such adverse conditions as exist at Northcote. The small, clayey embankment of the outer ground was without screenings. And while more fortunate spectators were balanced on bluestone boulders, others stolidly stood for the afternoon practically ankle deep in the mud.
